The Marshalls are a dreamscape: a concentration of perfect, tropical right-handers, idyllic island settings and a complete absence of tourists. After exploring the world’s oceans for new waves on the Indies Trader for the Quiksilver Crossing project, Martin Daly identified the Marshall Islands as the perfect surf destination. The archipelago’s isolation and low population have allowed the marine environment to remain completely intact – more so than almost anywhere else in the world.
The locals are a big factor; on the outer islands they have had no contact with tourists. The people are shy, but hospitable and friendly. This area offers up lots of beautiful, uninhabited islands, powder sand beaches, blue water with 100+ feet of visibility, palm trees, empty surf and some of the best fishing on the planet.
Depart from either Majuro or Kwajalein in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI).
This trip is extra special since the location is very remote, yet the travel time is short and simple: only a few hours beyond Hawaii. Your EpicQuest guide greets guests at the airport in the Marshalls on arrival. From here either transfer directly to the yacht by shuttle or in some cases, fly to an outer atoll via Air Marshall Islands (EpicQuest handles the ticketing for you).
Upon arrival on the boat you will kick off your shoes, settle in, and we’ll cruise (typically overnight) to the outer atolls and start scouting waves! Citizens of the U.S. are granted a visitor’s VISA upon arrival. The Marshalls are a US protectorate that operates in U.S. currency. Guests from other countries should check with the airline upon ticketing for VISA requirements.
Clean, perfect, empty and ready to ride. Mythical rights such as Nirvana and Amnesia are not to be missed. Most waves are reef-passes, though some are reef points. In winter, north swells offer up power and size, while persistent trade swell ensures consistency. Wave sizes generally range between four and six feet, increasing to ten feet and even bigger when a good swell rolls in. These spots can be surfed on any tide. The region caters to a range of abilities, from competent beginners in search of mellow perfect waves, to intermediate and advanced surfers seeking long walls and round barrels. The spots EpicQuest visits are highly isolated and secluded; the only people to share these great waves with are friends new and old on the yacht.
Tropical weather with trade winds is characteristic to the region – similar to Hawaii. The trades blow offshore at the waves we surf; the conditions are typically very clean. Temperatures barely fluctuate from the mid-80s during the day to upper-70s at night. Water temperatures hold steady in the low to mid 80’s. Water clarity is outstanding and the marine life is vibrant and diverse; it is like surfing in a tropical aquarium.
